The metallurgical industry has always been the largest consumer of Nb2O5, accounting for between 85% and 90% of total consumption. This mainly includes steel additives, superalloys, superconducting alloys and special base metal materials. Before the 1980s, the main sales direction of antimony oxide was in the metallurgical industry. Therefore, the main physical and chemical indicators of GB 3627-83 were based on this industry. As an additive for steel modification, the quality standard can reach the third grade of GB 3627-83; while the Nb2O5 used in the high-temperature alloy and material industry requires higher chemical impurities, and some alloys have high-temperature metal elements such as W and Mo. , Ta, Ti, etc. have special requirements; some customers have requirements for loose density, and hope to loosen the density.
The application of Nb2O5 in the electronics industry has developed rapidly in recent years. Although the total amount of use is small, it is growing faster than other industries. Nb2O5 used in monolithic capacitors accounts for a large share of the industry's consumption. This is due to the addition of Nb2O5, which greatly improves the thermal stability of monolithic capacitors and achieves a relatively stable high dielectric constant. In addition, Nb2O5 is widely used in electronic materials such as piezoelectric ceramics, heat-sensitive ceramics, electrothermal ceramics, electromagnets, optical waveguides, and electronic crystals. Although the total consumption in this area is not very large, it is developing rapidly and has a promising future. Due to the particularity of ceramic materials, it has high requirements on the physical properties such as particle size, particle size distribution and specific surface area of Nb2O5. Optical waveguides and electronic crystal materials are also an important application field of Nb2O5. All of them require high-purity Nb2O5, and the prospect is very broad.
The glass industry is the traditional application industry of Nb2O5. This is because Nb2O5 is added to the glass to make it have a higher refractive index (Ta2O5 is added to the glass to increase the refractive index, but because the price is too high, it can only be particularly demanding. It is widely used in optical glass, optical fiber, and coating materials. As a glass additive, it requires high coloring elements such as Cr, Ni, Fe, RE, etc.
